While we often look to make everything "perfect" when it comes to creating a haunted house we want to do the complete opposite. So, when I found this wooden house at my local craft store I had to really think and plan out how I was going to make it spooky and Halloweenie. This is a super creative and fun Halloween craft for kids of all ages to make. You can add as many Halloween details as you want with this one. I'm sharing all the little added elements that I came up with.

Easy Halloween Haunted House Craft

wooden bird house or craft house - this isn't the exact house I used, but it is very similar
utility knife
acrylic paints - black, purple, green
paint brushes
construction paper - multicolor
glue gun
Battery-powered tea lights
green painters tape

The first step in making this haunted house is finding a cute little birdhouse to work with. I like the two-story design of this house. I especially loved the front steps. It looked like the perfect entrance to a haunted house. Now, I'm not sure how this birdhouse was supposed to work, because it didn't have a hole in it for the birds to come in and out. So, I had to use a utility knife to cut a hole in the backside of the house. Thankfully, the house was built from a thin wood that was easy to slice into. I needed access to the inside of the house so that I could paint the inside and so I had somewhere to put my tea lights. So, that was my first step, cutting a hole. If your house has a hole, then skip cutting a hole!

Once the hole was cut, I had to make a few more modifications to the structure of the house. After all, a haunted house is pretty rough looking. So, I broke some of the window frames by pushing them in with my fingers and I used the knife to cut some gashes in the sides of the wood and in the roof.

Then it was time to do the painting. I started by painting the entire house black - inside and outside and even the ground outside. Once everything was black I added some slashes of purple and green for some added details.

Now, it was time to make all the Halloween creatures from construction paper. Draw and cut out as many creatures and details as you like. We drew a couple of ghosts, a witches broom, jack O'lanterns, bats, a black cat, and a zombie's hand.

When the house was dry I was ready to add the creatures. I used a glue gun to stick the cat and jack o'lantern to the side of the house. To attach the ghost to the side of the house, I glued the tail end to the side of the house. Folding the tail of the ghost allowed him to pop off the house, as though he was floating.

For the bats, I glued them to the edges of the roof which made it look like they were flying around the house. The ghost inside the house was a bit more of a challenge because I couldn't fit my hand inside the house. But I managed to add a dollop of hot glue on the ghost and then poke him into the window. I love how he turned out.

The finishing touch was the tea lights. I wrapped the green painter's tape around the white tea lights because I didn't want the white to stand out inside the house. And, using painter's tape means I am able to remove the tape and use my lights at other times of the year.

I love how this wooden Halloween haunted house turned out. It looks great at night, with only the tea light shining through the windows. It is the perfect handmade addition to our Halloween decor. I also am certain that there are endless ways to transform these little wooden houses into haunted houses. I can imagine an entire "street" filled with creepy little haunted homes for all the witches, zombies, ghosts, werewolves, and more!
