Long weekend...what to do?

By Jen

As we head into this Victoria Day long weekend, everyone is asking "What are you going to do?" There are the usual activities to take part in. We'll be heading to the garden centre and spending some time in the garden...probably cleaning out the garage...for the 100th time. I had my daughter make a list of things she wants to do this weekend..."book store, toy store, arcade, park." A pretty good mix of activities.
If you aren't sure how to spend the long weekend here is a list of inspiring ideas...from across the country.
Toronto, ON

Don Valley Brickworks - This weekend is the kick off of the Farmer's Market season - looking for yummy treats, veggies and fruit - look no further. This weekend the Brickworks is hosting TREC's Kids World of Energy Festival. A family friendly festival that will teach you all about alternative energy, solar power, wind power, climate change, etc. And if that doesn't appeal, just run around and check out the turtles

Fireworks

- Monday night 9:45pm at Ashbridges Bay...arrive early and dress appropriately
Local Historical sites - Fort York, David and Mary Thompson Park, Gibson House and others are hosting special events this weekend. Check the website for all the details.
Harbourfront Centre - Toronto International Circus Festival...want to learn how to juggle, check out fire eaters or just "clown" around?

Vancouver, BC
Lynn Canyon

- my daughter recommends Lynn Canyon (she visited last summer), a free alternative to the pricey Capilano Suspension bridge...go explore this magnificent park
Granville Island - the water park opens this weekend! or check out the artisans and street performers...check out the current events
Summer Night Market - this uniquely west coast experience of food and festivities opens for the season (Richmond)
Calgary, AB
5 Peaks Race - head over to Olympic Park to watch, or participate in, a variety of trail running events...for kids and adults
Heritage Park Historical Village

- be one of the first 500 visitors (arriving between 9:30-10:30am) and you can enjoy a free pancake breakfast...and tour around a pioneer village...how cool is that!?
Ottawa, ON
Tulip festival

- beautiful flowers, music and artists make for a festival I hope to attend one day
Victoria Day Festival - head over to Juliana Park for midway rides and fireworks
Halifax, NS
Bluenose Marathon

- whether watching or participating quite a site to see
Long Live the Queen Music Festival - newest music festival to hit Halifax with hip hop, folk, punk, electro, motown and doo wop music...sounds pretty good!
This trip across the country was a blast. Interesting to see that in every city there is some sort of festival to celebrate this long awaited weekend. If I missed an event where you live, let me know. Wherever you live I hope you get outside and enjoy the weekend...and don't forget to raise a glass and say "Happy Birthday" to Queen Victoria!
