Green Life - Spring Cleaning with Green Works

By Jen

Spring cleaning. Do any two words go together more beautifully? When I think of spring my mind wanders off to thoughts of buckets of soapy water. Generally speaking I am a vinegar and water kinda girl, so when an opportunity to try out Green Works products came along, I said "why not?" I have learned that Green Works products are made with plant-derived and mineral based cleaning ingredients and they are not tested on animals. I also appreciate that all the ingredients are listed directly on the bottle, I like seeing what is inside the products I clean with. With all of this in mind I decided to give these products a try.

When I was thinking about where to start cleaning, the spot that popped into my mind was the front entrance of our house. When I was in grade 6, my teacher said something that I will never forget "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." I have carried this phrase with me ever since. It is in the back of my mind when I first meet someone and when I welcome someone into my home. First impressions.

During the winter my entrance gets a real work out. We trample all over an industrial strength carpet...practical, not pretty. Our family happily treks in salt, snow and sleet. The winter coats pile high on the hooks. And, our basket of mitts, hats and scarves overflows. I try my best to maintain the cleanliness of the entranceway, but by the time that spring rolls around it is ready for a facelift.
This high traffic area has a number of different surfaces, glass, metal, wood and mirror. A perfect spot to try out a few new cleaning products. I selected the Green Works Glass and Surface Cleaner, Green Works All Purpose Cleaner and Green Works Dilutable Multi-Surface Cleaner. I grabbed my rags and bucket and spent the morning cleaning in the sunshine.

The entrance before...

The entrance after...

After clearing the space of all the coats, boots, shoes and accessories I then removed the carpet. This line of salt and dirt was left behind.

Five months of winter can be hard on a hardwood floor. Following the label instructions, I cleaned the floor and baseboards with Green Works Dilutable Multi-Surface Cleaner. The line was gone and floor was clean...sweet!

I even used the Multi-Surface Cleaner to remove any marks from the front hall walls. The products didn't remove my paint or affect the finish of the paint.

During the winter, my front door ends up being kicked by many mucky boots. Do your kids sometimes kick the door instead of knocking? Seriously!

So, the door was in need of a little TLC, Tender Loving Cleaning. This job required 2 products. For the indoor metal door, I used Green Works All Purpose Cleaner and for the glass storm door I used Green Works Glass and Surface Cleaner. Both worked great. The sun now comes shining in and the boot marks are gone.

Finally, I moved back in the spring coats and shoes. The lighter throw rugs made their way onto the floor. HOT TIP: With such limited space at the front entrance we use a small lidded basket to keep our light scarves, gloves, lint brush, hair brush and reusable bags...keeping things contained is key.

So, my entrance looks great. I think we make a pretty good first impression and so did Green Works. I really appreciate that these products are safe for use around my family. I understand that not all households are going to clean with baking soda and vinegar, so I think Green Works is a great alternative in the market place. I discovered that there is a unscented version of most of the products, although I do wish there was an unscented option for all. All in all Green Works will make a nice addition to my spring cleaning routine. How 'bout you? Do you use Green Works products in your home?

I'm kind of embarassed to admit it, I've never used GreenWorks before. I'd be delighted to try them out, though! (mer.marty@yahoo.com)

i've been using greenworks for a couple of years now. i love the smell & so does everyone who comes to my house! i must admit that i hate the glass cleaner - i find it leaves streaks & doesn't remove things like toothpaste from the bathroom mirror. i threw out my bottle after a couple of uses. i've read others have had problems with it as well.
