Who doesn't love an inspirational quote? I know I do. And, I love finding ways to incorporate words into art. This is why I love this tape resist art project for tweens and teens. It is a creative art project that uses their favorite lyrics or quote to inspire!

When I was a kid I would spend hours listening and relistening to my favorite songs. I devoured the lyrics and always found some sort of inspiration in the words being sung by my fave artists. Today's kids do the same thing. Is your tween (or teen, or are you) a huge fan of Taylor Swift? Maybe Beyonce is your Queen Bee? Maybe Harry Styles or Ed Sheeran? There is bound to be a lyric that you love and that you would love to turn into a beautiful piece of tape resist canvas art to hang on your wall.
Inspirational Quote Tape Resist Art
canvas
painters tape (1.41" wide)
acrylic paints - at least 3 different colors
paintbrush and an old toothbrush
thin permanent marker
ribbon
glue gun
push pins
The first step in making this art project is deciding what lyric, quote, poem, or words you want to write on your canvas. Obviously, this will be a very personal decision. I chose a Taylor Swift lyric. I wanted something that was inspiring and this quotation worked for me. It felt like the kind of quotation you'd read in a yearbook...right?!

Once you have selected your quote, it is time to place the tape on the canvas. How many lines are in your quote? Do you want the quotation to be centered on the canvas, or off to the side? On an angle or straight, as I made mine? Feel free to play around with the design. Place the tape and move it around until you find a position you like. I liked having jagged ends to the tape, but again, you could change it up. Firmly press the tape into place on the canvas, so the paint doesn't seep under the edges.
Best tape for canvas painting?
I find the best tape to use for painting on a canvas is Frog Tape. This is also the painter's tape I use when I paint my walls. It sticks firmly enough to keep the paint from seeping underneath while peeling off easily and not ruining the surface underneath. The key is pressing it down firmly.
Now that the tape is in place, it's time to paint. I chose 4 colors of paint and white. Just start painting. Any design will do. You could do stripes, polka dots, or random shapes. Once I had the main color painted on, I flicked white paint off the toothbrush to make little flecks of white paint. Have fun. Listen to some music and go with the flow.
When the painting is done, pull the tape off the canvas. Plan out how you will write the quotation or lyric on the canvas. Use a permanent marker to write, print, or maybe calligraphy the words in the voids the tape left. I opted for a thin marker and script, but a thicker marker with a bold font could work too.
The finishing touch is adding ribbon to the edge of the canvas. I chose a yellow, lacy ribbon that coordinated with the paint and gave a T.Swift vibe. If you don't have any ribbon, simply paint the sides of the canvas. A finished edge will look nice when you hang your piece.
Okay, the tape resist Taylor Swift canvas is done! It's time to hang it up on the wall. My canvas was light enough to hand from a couple of push pins. I simply pushed the pins into the wall, where I wanted to hang the canvas. Then rested the canvas on the pins. You could use a nail in the same way. Or, if your canvas is larger and doesn't have a hanger on the back, you can always purchase hangers that easily screw into the wooden edge of the canvas.
