Earth Day is fast approaching. I have to admit, Earth Day is one of my favourite holidays. We always do some sort of fun Earth Day activities on Earth Day – celebrating our glorious Mother Earth. This year, I wanted to create a festive and fun garland for our indoor decor.

So, after we had so much fun creating our beautiful Valentine’s Day garland I was inspired to bring out the newspaper and transform it into a gorgeous Earth Day garland. The best part about this garland is that not only does it give a new life to the newspaper, but we can pack up the garland and bring it out year after year after year.
Recycled Newspaper Earth Day Garland
newspaper
yellow and blue acrylic paint
paintbrush
circle cookie cutter, heart cookie cutter
pencil, scissors
twine
embroidery needle
Begin by painting the newspaper with blue paint. Mix in enough yellow paint to make the green colour you like and paint the green on top of the blue. Be sure to paint both sides of the newspaper, or the paper will curl up. Thin the paint with as much, or as little water as you like. The only caution is to not soak the paper, or it may rip. Set the painted newspaper aside to dry completely.
Use a pencil to trace the circles and hearts onto the paper. If you don’t have a circle-shaped cookie cutter, use a glass or small plate as a template. Cut out the circles and hearts.
