Father’s Day Play

by Jen on June 14, 2011 in craft,family,father's day,kids

I got to thinking about my Mother’s Day post…when I said all I really wanted from my family was a little time with them. I’m going to assume this is what every dad wants too…right? When brainstorming gift/time activities with my girls the suggestion of a puppet play came about. What dad wouldn’t want to watch his kids perform…in his honour?
This activity is great because it is flexible for all ages. My 7 year old daughter immediately sat down and wrote a script – while my 5 year old decided she wanted to “wing it.”

They both created custom back drops

Custom puppets (construction paper, markers, tape and skewers)

The dress rehearsals

The stories: My eldest daughter’s play is titled “Going to Space”. This play follows the lives of a daughter and father who decide to go to outerspace…in a space ship…meet up with aliens and generally have a great time. My youngest daughter’s play has an ever changing title and involves a family (with a dog named “Popstar” and a car named “Broom”) that decide to wash the family car.
As you can see this project is entirely flexible. In fact, I’m sure the stories will evolve right up until the moment they are presented to dad. If your child is old enough, have them write out the script – this way you have something to keep. If your child likes making movies (like some boys I know) what about a movie for dad. Kids like superheroes – superhero dad play would be a blast. Whatever the topic – whoever the child – puppet shows rock!
PS – I forgot to tell my husband, in advance, about this week’s topic – he has since dropped my feed on Twitter…don’t tell him what we did today…shhh.

My hubby would just adore this! And what dad wouldn’t? And yes, you definitely have to tape it – they will love watching (or be completely embarrassed) when they are older.

Thanks for sharing this with us.
